ByteDance is reorienting its AI assistant Doubao away from a consumer-focused chatbot strategy toward enterprise AI tools: coding and agents, aligning with a B2B strategy pioneered by rival Chinese AI company Zhipu AI.
According to multiple sources, ByteDance senior executives recently visited Anthropic, after which the company began reorganizing its internal AI resources. The restructuring is reportedly directing talent and infrastructure away from mass-market products such as the Doubao consumer chatbot toward enterprise AI services, particularly coding systems and agents.
Internally, Doubao's monetization gap is becoming increasingly hard to ignore. Despite claiming more than 200 million daily active users, the product reportedly generates less than 1 million yuan in daily revenue, relying mainly on e-commerce-related commissions. Meanwhile, operating costs are rising rapidly, with daily computing expenses reaching tens of millions of yuan, especially as multimodal features such as image understanding, voice interaction, and video processing significantly increase inference costs compared to text-only systems. This shift reflects both market opportunity and internal pressure. On the demand side, enterprise adoption of AI coding tools has accelerated. Stack Overflow's 2025 developer survey found that 84% of developers already use or plan to use AI in their workflows, while nearly half report daily usage. Gartner forecasts suggest that by 2028, about 90% of enterprise software engineers will rely on AI coding assistants in some form, indicating a structural shift in software development practices.
To address this imbalance, ByteDance launched Doubao 2.1 Pro on June 23, positioning it as a model optimized for coding and agent capabilities. The company claims that in some tests the model approaches or rivals leading systems such as GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus 4.7. Now the company is leveraging its existing enterprise ecosystem, including ByteDance. Lark (Feishu) already serves a large base of enterprise customers, while Volcano Engine provides mature cloud and AI infrastructure capabilities. Meanwhile, ByteDance's AI video generation platform Seedance has reportedly reached annual revenue of about 14.3 billion yuan with a gross margin of approximately 70%, a scale increasingly seen as a way to offset a significant portion of Doubao's computing costs.
The pricing strategy remains highly competitive. Doubao coding subscription starts at just 9.9 yuan for the first month, then increases to 40 yuan per month for the Lite tier and 200 yuan per month for the Pro tier. The Doubao-Seed-Code API costs approximately 1.2 yuan per million input tokens with caching, which is reportedly about 62.7% below the industry average, indicating an aggressive effort to capture market share among developers and enterprises.
Overall, this transition represents a decisive repositioning of Doubao, transforming it from a mass consumer AI product into a monetization-focused business AI platform, reflecting a broader industry trend toward AI-assisted software development and agentic workflows.
