Anthropic is launching an internal drug discovery initiative as part of a broader push to build artificial intelligence tools tailored for pharmaceutical and biotech companies, marking another significant step by the leading AI company into the healthcare and biotechnology sector.

The program was announced on Tuesday at an event in San Francisco, where Eric Kuderer-Abrams, head of life sciences at Anthropic, said the company will initially focus on finding treatments for "neglected" diseases that are often overlooked by traditional pharmaceutical companies due to limited commercial incentives. He emphasized that the effort is aimed not only at advancing research but also at improving the company's own AI systems through participation in the actual drug development process.

Kuderer-Abrams said Anthropic believes that building effective AI models for science requires direct involvement in the industry they aim to serve. "We're doing this because first and foremost we believe that to build the right models, products, and tools that accelerate the industry, we need to live alongside you," he said, adding that close feedback with researchers and drug manufacturers is necessary to improve performance in complex scientific workflows.

The company did not disclose what it will do if it discovers promising drug candidates, or whether it intends to advance compounds into clinical trials, a step typically required before any treatment reaches patients. An Anthropic spokesperson said that as a public benefit corporation, it can prioritize programs based on patient impact, including areas that the commercial market tends to ignore. The spokesperson also added that the initiative is still in its early stages, and more details will be provided as it develops.

This move puts Anthropic alongside a growing number of major technology companies expanding their presence in healthcare. Google, for example, has invested significant resources in its Verily division and other medical initiatives, ranging from medical data analysis to research tools, while Amazon has built a substantial healthcare presence through acquisitions, including One Medical and PillPack, which are now part of its Amazon Health Services division.

Anthropic executives framed the drug discovery effort as closely tied to their broader life sciences commercialization strategy, particularly their new Claude Science product. Joni Cull, who leads life sciences partnerships at the company, said the goal is to develop AI systems that better serve pharmaceutical companies by working directly on the scientific challenges these clients face, including neglected disease research.

The initiative reflects a broader trend in the AI industry, where companies are increasingly moving beyond software tools toward domain-specific applications that require deeper integration with regulated industries. While it is still early, Anthropic's move signals a more active role in shaping how AI is applied in drug discovery, a field that remains extremely complex, costly, and uncertain despite rapid advances in machine learning.
