AI adoption among U.S. small and midsize businesses (SMBs) has surged to 78% in 2026, up sharply from 48% in July 2024, according to Intuit QuickBooks’ latest AI Impact Report. Nearly half of these businesses, 46%, now use AI specifically for marketing purposes.
This rapid integration of AI coincides with one of the most enduring challenges facing small businesses: the high cost of professional branding. Full branding packages, which include logos, visual identities, marketing collateral, and websites, traditionally range from $20,000 to $100,000 or more. Custom business websites alone can cost between $8,000 and $40,000, depending on scale and complexity.
The United States is home to 36.2 million small enterprises, accounting for 99.9% of all U.S. firms. Yet for the majority, professional branding remains financially out of reach. For businesses whose first-year revenue may not cover the cost of credibility, establishing a strong brand has often been a distant goal.
Clancy Clarke, CMO at Design, an AI-powered design platform for entrepreneurs, explained that small businesses frequently cannot afford to outsource design early on. “They end up with a logo from Fiverr and a website that doesn’t convert, and by the time they can afford better, the bad first impression has already done damage,” Clarke said.
Traditionally, the execution of a brand identity demanded hiring agencies or professional designers, making branding a significant financial commitment. The average U.S. small business spends roughly $78,000 annually on advertising, representing about 37% of its total marketing budget. AI-powered tools, however, are beginning to lower these barriers, allowing SMBs to produce professional-level branding assets at a fraction of the traditional cost and accelerating their ability to compete in crowded markets.
