Japan’s three largest banks plan to adopt a new artificial intelligence model developed by OpenAI, the creator of the popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.
Sources said on Thursday that Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank plan to introduce the AI system to strengthen their ability to counter increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
The OpenAI model is reportedly comparable in capability to Claude Mythos, an AI model developed by US startup Anthropic. Claude Mythos excels at identifying vulnerabilities in systems.
Alongside OpenAI’s technology, the three banks also plan to explore the use of Claude Mythos, using these two advanced AI models to improve their cybersecurity measures.
Regulators, including Japan’s Financial Services Agency and the Bank of Japan, have urged financial institutions to strengthen their defenses against AI-related risks, noting that emerging AI technologies could be used for cyberattacks.
