Japan’s three major banks are set to adopt a new artificial intelligence model developed by OpenAI, the developer of the popular generative AI chatbot ChatGPT.
Sources said on Thursday that Mitsubishi UFJ Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mizuho Bank plan to deploy the AI system to strengthen their ability to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
OpenAI’s model is reportedly comparable in capabilities to Claude Mythos, an AI model developed by the US startup Anthropic. Claude Mythos excels at identifying system vulnerabilities.
In addition to OpenAI’s technology, the three banks also plan to explore using Claude Mythos, leveraging these two advanced AI models to enhance cybersecurity measures.
Regulators, including Japan’s Financial Services Agency and the Bank of Japan, have urged financial institutions to strengthen their defenses against AI-related risks, noting that emerging AI technologies could be used for cyberattacks.
