Apple's desktop computer strategy is undergoing significant restructuring, as the company is reportedly preparing an unusual chip development plan, skipping an entire generation of high-quality silicon in favor of accelerating progress in AI-focused computing. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is planning two separate Mac Studio update cycles: an M5 Ultra model expected as early as this year, and a more advanced M7 Ultra version scheduled for 2028.

The gap is caused by Apple's decision to skip the M6 generation for its high-end chips. Reportedly, the base M6 chip may still be released, but the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants are being canceled, effectively eliminating any path to an M6 Ultra configuration. As a result, Apple's high-performance desktop lineup will transition directly from M5 Ultra to M7 Ultra without an intermediate architectural step.

This move reflects a broader transformation within Apple, as the company increasingly aligns its Mac hardware roadmap with AI objectives and long-term on-device data processing needs. The Mac Studio, positioned as a workstation for professionals in video production, 3D rendering, and intensive development tasks, is also becoming a key device for local AI processing as Apple deepens its integrated artificial intelligence efforts.

In addition to the chip transition, according to Bloomberg, Apple is working on internal hardware changes for future Mac Studio systems, including a redesigned heatsink and an improved cooling system designed to support higher sustained power consumption. While no external changes have been confirmed yet, analysts note that Apple has historically maintained desktop computer enclosure designs across long product release cycles.

The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is expected to function as a relatively straightforward performance update, but the M7 Ultra generation may introduce more significant architectural changes aimed at supporting AI-heavy workloads. However, the increased gap between major chip generations means the current Mac Studio lineup may remain in place longer than usual, with a major architectural leap expected only in the second half of the decade.

Industry specialists also note growing price pressure across Apple's hardware product lineup, driven by rising costs of memory and components related to the artificial intelligence boom. The Mac Studio has already faced memory configuration limitations, with reports of reduced maximum RAM capacity despite internal testing with significantly higher limits. If these trends persist, the next M7 Ultra system version may be released at a significantly higher price, potentially limiting its audience to high-end professional users.

Analysts suggest that this plan demonstrates a broader strategic shift at Apple: prioritizing AI performance density and thermal efficiency over traditional generational continuity in chip development, even if it leads to longer intervals between flagship desktop device releases.
