Airbus has entered into a strategic partnership with French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI to deepen the integration
of AI into all areas of its operations: civil aviation, defense, and space. The agreement, announced on Thursday,
will allow Airbus to use the full range of products and scientific expertise of Mistral AI to create customized solutions on
the basis of artificial intelligence for complex aerospace projects.
As part of the collaboration, Airbus plans to implement reliable and secure AI technologies, especially for sensitive solutions in the field of
defense and space. Catherine Jestin, Executive Vice President of Digital Transformation at Airbus, stated: 'This partnership
opens the way to implementing effective and high-value use cases for reliable and responsible artificial intelligence in
the aerospace industry.'
Timothée Lacroix, co-founder and CTO of Mistral AI, emphasized that the collaboration will accelerate innovation processes, enhance
flight safety, and bring greater benefits to customers. Airbus will also gain access to Mistral's research teams
and some influence over the company's AI-based product development roadmap.
Both companies have identified a number of priority areas for joint work. Among them are the implementation of AI systems
on board aircraft and spacecraft, automation of technical documentation, reduction of engineering development timelines and
design through AI-based simulations, as well as the creation of edge AI for real-time tasks,
such as object recognition to enhance flight safety. Defense-oriented projects will focus on cyber investigations and
support for secure programming in high-security environments.
This partnership reflects growing concern among European players about dependence on American AI suppliers, related to issues of
data sovereignty, risks of information leaks, and the jurisdictional influence of American legislation on data,
stored on US-owned infrastructure. By collaborating with a European artificial intelligence startup,
Airbus aims to strengthen technological independence while simultaneously developing AI-based innovation across all sectors of the aerospace industry.
