Airbus has entered into a strategic partnership with French AI start-up Mistral AI to advance the integration of artificial intelligence across its aviation, defence, and space operations. The agreement, announced Thursday, will allow Airbus to leverage Mistral AI’s complete suite of products and research expertise to develop bespoke AI solutions for complex aerospace projects.
Under the collaboration, Airbus aims to deploy “trusted” and “secure” AI technologies, particularly in sensitive defence and aerospace applications. Catherine Jestin, Airbus executive vice president of digital, stated, “This partnership paves the way for the deployment of high-impact, high-value use cases of trusted and responsible AI in aerospace.”
Timothée Lacroix, co-founder and chief technology officer of Mistral AI, highlighted that the partnership would accelerate innovation, enhance flight safety, and deliver greater value to customers. Airbus will also gain access to Mistral’s research teams and a degree of influence over the company’s AI product roadmap.
The two companies have identified several priority areas for collaboration. These include deploying AI systems onboard aircraft and spacecraft, automating technical documentation, speeding up engineering and design cycles through AI-driven simulations, and developing edge AI capabilities for real-time applications such as object recognition to enhance flight safety. Defence-oriented initiatives will explore cyber investigations and secure coding support in high-security environments.
The partnership reflects growing European concerns over reliance on US-based AI providers, amid issues of data sovereignty, security exposure, and the legal reach of American legislation over data stored on US-owned infrastructure. By collaborating with a European AI start-up, Airbus seeks to strengthen its technological independence while advancing AI innovation across aerospace sectors.
