Rivian has rolled out a new in-car artificial intelligence feature, Rivian Assistant, through a software update for owners of its R1T pickup and R1S SUV who subscribe to the Connect Plus plan, with the capability also set to debut in the upcoming R2 model.
The update underscores the automaker’s growing focus on software-driven differentiation as competition intensifies in the electric vehicle market.
Developed to run natively on the vehicle’s onboard hardware, the Rivian Assistant enables drivers to interact with their vehicles using natural, conversational language rather than rigid voice commands. The system is designed to understand context and intent, allowing users to perform a wide range of tasks, from adjusting climate and driving settings to handling navigation and sending messages, without taking their hands off the wheel.
A key feature of the assistant is its integration with Google Calendar, which supports multitasking by helping drivers manage schedules, appointments and routes more efficiently while on the move. Rivian said the AI will continue to improve over time by learning individual driver preferences, tailoring responses and suggestions to enhance the overall user experience.
The company emphasized that privacy remains a central component of the system, with user controls in place to manage how data is used and stored. By balancing personalization with data protection, Rivian aims to build trust as it expands its digital ecosystem.
