Meta is pushing deeper into privacy-focused artificial intelligence with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing a new “Incognito Chat” feature, positioning it as a major shift in how AI conversations are handled and stored.

According to Zuckerberg, Incognito Chat is designed to ensure that user conversations are neither saved nor retained on company servers, marking what he described as “the first major AI product” to operate without maintaining logs of user interactions. The feature mirrors the concept of incognito or private modes already familiar in web browsers and some chatbot services, where conversations are not recorded in user history.

However, Meta claims its approach goes further. In addition to not storing messages, Incognito Chat is built with end-to-end encryption, meaning that conversations are secured in such a way that only the participants can access the content. The company emphasized that, under this system, even Meta itself cannot view or retrieve user exchanges.

This positioning stands in contrast to other AI platforms that offer incognito-style modes but still process or temporarily access message data on their servers. Zuckerberg argued that those systems may prevent conversations from appearing in history logs, yet still allow companies to see incoming queries and outgoing responses.

The launch also comes at a time when Meta has faced scrutiny over its messaging privacy practices. Notably, the company recently removed end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages, a move that drew criticism from privacy advocates. Against that backdrop, Incognito Chat appears to be an attempt to reassert Meta’s commitment to secure communication in the AI era.

The introduction of such a feature reflects a broader industry shift toward privacy-centric AI tools, as users become increasingly concerned about how their data is collected, stored, and used. Whether Meta’s claims of complete privacy can be independently verified remains to be seen, but the announcement signals intensifying competition among tech giants to build trust around AI-driven communication.
